NOAF Building Tour: The Rose Collaborative

  • The Rose Collaborative 2539 Columbus Street New Orleans, LA, 70119 United States (map)

Join us as we tour the Rose Collaborative and hear from the project's development team. Rose Community Development Corporation and Alembic Community Development have partnered to redevelop three vacant, historic properties as the Rose Collaborative, a new 1.5-acre hub for the arts, education, and entrepreneurship in the former St Rose de Lima church building on Bayou Road and two schoolhouses on Columbus Street in New Orleans’ 7th Ward. The project, which is currently completing construction and is opening incrementally in the summer of 2018, includes a three-part program: Performing Arts Space, Early Childhood - 8th Grade School, and Shared Office Space & Community Business Incubator. Metro Studio is the architect of record.

The tour will be led by the project developer, Mike Grote of Alembic Community Development.

Shared Office Space & Community Business Incubator:

The 10,600 square foot, 1938 schoolhouse at 2533 Columbus Street is being renovated into shared office spaces targeting nonprofit organizations, entrepreneurs, and small businesses. The ground floor co-working space will be anchored by Fund 17, a nonprofit organization that provides tailored business development and capital access assistance to community entrepreneurs and business owners in New Orleans. The building will have additional nonprofit anchor tenants along with small offices and desks on the ground floor available for lease by a range of co-working tenants.

Early Childhood – 8th Grade School:

The 22,600 square foot, 1925 schoolhouse at 2539 Columbus Street is being renovated for the Waldorf School of New Orleans, a nonprofit school operating in the city for 15 years that integrates academics with the arts, culture, and community from early childhood through 8th grade. The school will also have multiple spaces outside adjacent to the schoolhouse that will be central to students’ learning through outdoor play and exploration and is scheduled to open for the 2019 – 2020 school year.

Performing Arts Space:

The development will be anchored on Bayou Road by the new home for Southern Rep Theatre, New Orleans’ acclaimed 30-year theatre production company, which will utilize the 12,350 square foot, 1915 church building to showcase and advance the performing arts through a main stage theater for large productions; a secondary theater space for cabaret, independent and emerging theatre companies, children’s performances, readings, concerts and solo acts; and an outdoor plaza and performance area in front of the church that opens up the building and programs to Bayou Road.
